Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on Guru Purnima and Shravan Purnima 2009

A penumbral lunar eclipse will occur on Tuesday, 7 July 2009 (Guru Purnima) the second of four such phenomena this year, but it will not be visible in India and has no astrological significance.

It will be seen rising over Australia after dusk on July 7, and setting over western North and South America in the early predawn hours of July 7.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth is in a straight line between the sun and the moon and the shadow of the earth falls on the moon, a penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through penumbra, the lighter part of the earth’s shadow.
