Effect of prayer on an individual

Prayer lifts an individual to unparalleled glory. No other experience in life can be compared to it. Once a person is involved in it, it gives pleasure akin to reciting a melodious, heartfelt poem. It attracts prosperity and glory. One begins to experience peace and happiness.

Hindu Religious texts cite innumerable examples of individuals who achieved this – outstanding devotees like Narad, Bhakta Prahlad, Dhurva, Jatayu, Ajamil, Kewat, Shabri and many more. These devotees achieved salvation through their devotion to the Almighty. Lord Shankar achieved immortality. It is devotion and prayer that ensures peace and contenment to saints and sages.

In Kalyug, the fourth part of the worldly cycle where acts of sin predominate, the best form achieving salvation is through devotedly praying to God. There is no other alternative but to remember the Almighty.

In the Shrimadbhagwat, 6/2/14-15, it is said:

It does not matter how you remember God. You may mention Him in conversation. You may remember Him when narrating a Joke. you may even remember Him with disrespect. The simple act of remembrance cleanses one’s sins. Whoever thinks of Him on the occasion of a failure, a fall, in loss, on being hurt or when distressed and disabled, and utters His name, shall not suffer.

In the Ramcharitmanas, Uttarkand, 102A, Tulsidas has also said that in Kalyug one achieves salvation just by repeating the name of God. In satyayug, Tretayug and Dwaparyug this had to be achieved through meditation, sacrifice, yagya and prayer. Tulsidas is emphatic about repeating the name of Ram.

In the Bhagavad Gita, 8/5, Lord Krishna has said:

Whoever remembers Me at the time of his death shall come to Me. There should be no doubt about it.
