फागुन शुक्ल अष्टमी से पूर्णिमा तक आठ दिन होलाष्टक मनाया जाता है । इसी के साथ होली उत्सव मनाने की शुरु‌आत होती है। होलिका दहन की तैयारी भी यहाँ से आरंभ हो जाती है। इस पर्व को नवसंवत्सर का आगमन तथा वसंतागम के उपलक्ष्य में किया हु‌आ यज्ञ भी माना जाता है। वैदिक काल में इस पर्व को नवान्नेष्टि यज्ञ कहा जाता था। पुराणों के अनुसार ऐसी भी मान्यता है कि जब भगवान शंकर ने अपनी क्रोधाग्नि से कामदेव को भस्म कर दिया था, तभी से इसका प्रचलन हु‌आ।
