The Mahamrituanjaya mantra is very special. Chanting this mantra has helped people overcome incurable diseases and avoid early death. This mantra is devoted to Lord Shiva. When pleased with devotee, Lord Shiva protects one from accidents, terminal diseases and death. One is able to get over the malefic effects of planets. It is customary to chant the mantra 125 thousand times over a period to promote long life. The responsibility to chanting the mantra can be entrusted to a responsible Brahmin priest.

In the Padampuran there is a mention of the Mahamrituanjaya mantra as composed in hymn form by Maharishi Markanday.

In the Rig-Veda, 4/52/12 the mantra has been recorded as:

Om Trayambakam Yajaamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvaarukmiv Bandhanaan-mrityormuksheeya Maamritaat.

"I pray and seek the blessings of the three-eyed Lord Shiva. May I become free from the bondage of death just like a nourishing melon with your blessings, and not with the celestial nectar".

This Mantra should be chanted 125 thousand times. After completion of the chanting twelve thousand five hundred times offer oblations in the holy fire with a mixture of Bel leaves, Kheir, Vat, Sesame seeds, mustard seeds, Kheer (sweet porridge of rice and milk), curd and grass blades. Ghee should be added to this mixture and oblations made with chanting the above Mantra. Then perform Abhishek one thousand two hundred fifty times for the patient for whose health this ritual is being done. Abhishek means sprinkling of water on someone each time chanting above Mantra. If there has been some accident or there is threat to life or any problem, pain or fear then one should chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra energised with the Mritsanjivini Vidya devised by Shukracharya. This is called Mritsanjeevani Mahamrityunjaya Mantra:

Om Hroum Om Joom Om Sah Om Bhooh Om Bhuvah Om Swah Om Trayambakam Yajaamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam Urvaarukmiv Bandhanaan-mrityormuksheeya Maamritaat, Om Swah Om Bhuvah Om Bhooh Om Sah Om Joom Om Hroum Om.

It can sure avert death if chanted properly.

THE FULL moon day in the month of Ashad (July-August) is an extremely auspicious and holy day of Guru Purnima. On this day, sacred to the memory of the great sage, Bhagavan Sri Vyasa, Sannyasins settle at some place to study and discourse on the thrice-blessed Brahma Sutras composed by Maharishi Vyasa, and engage themselves in Vedantic, philosophical investigation.Sri Vyasa has done unforgettable service to humanity for all times by editing the four Vedas, writing the eighteen Puranas, the Mahabharata and the Srimad Bhagavata. We can only repay the deep debt of gratitude we owe him, by constant study of his works and practice of his teachings imparted for the regeneration of humanity in this iron age. In honour of this divine personage, all spiritual aspirants and devotees perform Vyasa Puja on this day, and disciples worship their spiritual preceptor. Saints, monks and men of God are honoured and entertained with acts of charity
by all the householders with deep faith and sincerity.

The period Chaturmas (the “four months”) begins from this day; Sannyasins stay at one place during the ensuing four rainy months, engaging in the study of the Brahma Sutras and the practice of meditation.

Live on milk and fruit on this day and practise rigorous Japa and meditation. Study the Brahma Sutras and do Japa of your Guru Mantra, during the four months following the Guru Purnima. You will be highly benefited.

The Srutis say: “To that high-souled aspirant, whose devotion to the Lord is great and whose devotion to his Guru is as great as that to the Lord, the secrets explained herein become illuminated”.

Guru is Brahman, the Absolute, or God Himself. He guides and inspires you from the innermost core of your being. He is everywhere. Have a new angle of vision. Behold the entire universe as the form of the Guru. See the guiding hand, the awakening voice, the illuminating touch of the Guru in every object in this creation. The whole world will now stand transformed before your changed vision. The world as Guru will reveal all the precious secrets of life to you, and bestow wisdom upon you. The supreme Guru, as manifested in visible nature, will teach you the most valuable lessons of life. Worship daily this Guru of Gurus, the Guru who taught even the Avadhuta Dattatreya.

Dattatreya, regarded as God and the Guru of Gurus, considered Nature Herself as His Guru, and learnt a number of lessons from Her twenty-four creatures, and hence he is said to have had twenty-four Gurus.

Remember and adore Sri Vyasa and the Gurus who are fully established in knowledge of the Self. May their blessings be upon you! May you cut asunder the knot of ignorance and shine as blessed sages shedding peace, joy and light everywhere!

गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्‍वरः ।
गुरु साक्षात्‌ परब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरुवे नमः ॥

After bath, worship the lotus feet of your Guru, or his image or picture with flowers, fruits, incense and camphor.....

Maun-vrat literally means a vow to keep silent. For spiritual growth it is essential that one's speech must be pure. To acquire purity of speech the practice of silence is important. Hindu religious texts commend maun-vrat for this purpose.

In Bhadon, sixth month of the Hindu calendar, 16 days of maun-vrat are said to be useful. It is believed that through silence one is able to achieve one's desire. One attains the abode of Lord Shiva. Along with maun-vrat it is essential that some time must be spent in offering prayers.

In the Bhagavad Gita,17/16, it is said:

Contentment of the mind, amiable temperament, silence, religious meditation and good thoughts reflect austerity of the mind.

Silence is placed mid-way between other qualities. It begins with control of the mind. once the mind is controlled, one becomes friendly. One begins to look kindly towards others. One cuts down on useless speech and thinks more of God. One begins to generate good thoughts.

In the Chanakya Niti, 11/9, it is said:

Whoever can remain silent everyday for a full year becomes worthy of thousands of years of praise in heaven.

Silence can change the personality of an individual. Through silence a person controls anger and speech. One grows stronger through greater determination and self-confidence. One is more at peace and free of tension. There is conservation of energy and a person experiences greater inner strength.
