The four dogs of Dattatreya are the embodiments of the four Vedas. महायोगीश्वर दत्तात्रेयजी भगवान्‌ विष्णुके अवतार हैं। इनका अवतरण मार्गशीर्ष पूर्णिमाको प्रदोषकाल में हुआ था। अत: इस दिन बडे समारोहसे दत्तजयन्तीका उत्सव मनाया जाता है । Behind the Lord Dattatreya is the cow named Kamadhenu. This divine cow grants the wishes and desires of all those who seek the Lord. गिरनारक्षेत्र् श्री दत्तात्रेयजी का सिद्धपीठ् है। इनकी चरणपादुकाएँ वाराणसी तथा आबूपर्वत् आदि कई स्थानों पर् हैं।
