Total/Partial Solar eclipse (Surya Grahan) will be visible in India, some of the Japanese islands, China and Pacific Ocean. The eclipse begins with the sunrise in the western part of India, travels to eastern part of India, crosses to Myna-mar (Burma), small islands of Japan and China. In India Surat, Indore, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Varanasi and Patna are some of the cities lie close to the central part of the totality. In China duration of the totality will be about 5 minutes. In India altitude of the sun will be about 15 degrees in the eastern part at the time of total eclipse and this period is full of rains due to South West monsoon.

खग्रास मार्ग के मध्य पडने वाले नगरों में आप दिन (प्रात:) के समय ही रात जैसा अद्भुत दृश्य देख सकते हैं। प्रात: मंगल, शुक्र को पूर्व में तथा गुरु को पश्चिमी आकाश में देख सकते हैं। प्रात: ७/३० बजे तक अन्य प्रमुख तारे भी टिमटिमाते नजर आएंगे । खग्रास प्रारम्भ एवं समाप्ति पर हीरे जैसी आकृति भी आप देख सकते हैं।

Sutak ग्रहण का सूतक - इस ग्रहण का सूतक सामान्यत: 21 July,2009 के सूर्यास्त से प्रारम्भ हो जायेगा । लेकिन ग्रस्तोदय ग्रहण हो तो स्पर्शकाल से ठीक १२ घण्टे पूर्व लगभग 17:28 Hrs (IST) से प्रारम्भ हो जायेगा।

At the time of the Solar eclipse, people bathe in the sacred rivers. They do charitable acts. They give cows, money and gold. The day after the eclipse they feed the poor, the Brahmins and the Sadhus. After the eclipse they clean their houses, vessels, etc., and take a bath before they start cooking.

One should not take food during the Solar or Lunar eclipse. When the eclipse begins the food should by then have been digested. One should take food only after seeing the sun or the moon free from the eclipse. When the clear sun or the moon is not seen before sunset or sunrise, in the case of the solar and lunar eclipse respectively, food can be taken only after the sun or the moon is seen the next day.

Pregnant women should not see the sun or the moon during the time of the eclipse. If they do the child born may have some kind of defect. He may be born deaf, dumb or blind.

गर्भवती महिलाओं को ग्रहणकाल में सब्ज़ी काटना, पापड सेंकनादि उत्तेजित कार्यों से परहेज़ करना चाहिए । Householders are forbidden from sexual intercourse on the day of the eclipse, for the same reason.

Those who do Japa at the time of the eclipse (Surya Grahan)  derive great benefits. The effect of Japa and Sankirtan during the eclipse contributes towards relieving the suffering of humanity and also of the planets. These people receive the blessings of the gods.

रजस्वला स्त्री गंगा आदि नदियों या सरोवर में डुबकी न लगाएं, अपितु पात्र द्वारा उसका पानी अलग लेकर स्नान करें।

ग्रहण का माहत्म्य - कुरुक्षेत्र, हरिद्वार आदि तीर्थों पर स्नानादि का अनन्त माहात्म्य होगा। ग्रहण में स्पर्श के समय स्नान, मध्य में होम और देवपूजन और ग्रहण मोक्ष के समय में श्राद्ध और अन्न, वत्र, धनादि का दान और सर्वमुक्‍त होने पर स्नान करें - यह क्रम है।
