It is a long tradition that one reads the Devi-Bhagavatam or the Devi Mahatmyam (Durga saptashati, 700 verses on Durga) during Navaratra to invoke the blessings of Mother Durga. Devi Bhagavatam notes that Lord Rama meditated and fasted for nine days after Devi Sita was kidnapped by Ravana.

Ram Navami : 19/20 April 2013 || मंगल भवन अमंगल हारी, दॄवहुसु दशरथ अजिर बिहारि ॥ चैत्र शुक्ल नवमी का धार्मिक दृष्टि से विशेष महत्व है। आज ही के दिन तेत्रा युग में रघुकुल शिरोमणि महाराज दशरथ एवं महारानी कौशल्या के यहाँ अखिल ब्रम्हांड नायक अखिलेश ने पुत्र के रूप में जन्म लिया था। रामजन्म के कारण ही चैत्र शुक्ल नवमी को रामनवमी कहा जाता है। रामनवमी के दिन ही गोस्वामी तुलसीदास ने रामचरित मानस की रचना का श्रीगणेश किया था। Ram Navami is commemorated in Hindu households by puja (prayer).

Navaratri is celebrated four times a year. They are Ashada Navaratri, the Sharada Navaratri, the Maha Navaratri and the Vasantha Navaratri. Of these, the Sharada Navaratri of the month of Ashwin and the Vasantha Navaratri of the Chaitra are very important. If you refer to the Agni Purana, then it is said that the Asvin and Chaitra are like the two jaws of Lord Yama. If one wants to escape the mouth of Yama, then one should celebrate Navaratri on these two occassions. A similar analogy is presented in the Devi Bhagavatam.
शीतलाष्टमी (बसौडा) – चैत्र कृष्ण अष्टमी
यह व्रत चैत्र कृष्ण अष्टमी या चैत्रमासके प्रथम पक्षमें होलीके बाद पडनेवाले पहले सोमवार अथवा गुरुवारको किया जाता है। इस व्रत को करनेसे व्रतीके कुलमें दाहज्वर, पीतज्वर, विस्फोटक, दुर्गन्धयुक्त फोडे, नेत्रोंके समस्त रोग, शीतलाकी फुंसियोंके चिन्ह तथा शीतलाजनित दोष दूर हो जाते हैं। इस व्रत को करनेसे शीतला देवी प्रसन्न होती है।
